As a bilingual daughter to a Spanish-speaking family in the U.S., Isi has been interpreting informally from a young age. Originally from Chile, Isi first moved to Pittsburgh when she was 7 years old. She continues to go back and forth, attending undergrad in Chile and moving back to the U.S. to study architecture in New York City. When she started with Global Wordsmiths in 2023, she was able to hone her professional interpretation skills, and even continues to attend training offered at the office, just to stay updated on the latest guides and best practices.

One of Isi’s favorite aspects of interpreting is seeing the patient become more comfortable with the provider and thriving over time thanks to consistently using the same interpreter. She particularly enjoys recurring medical and therapy sessions that bring some comfort and consistency into the patient's life. She also enjoys hearing and learning different linguistic nuances even within her own native language (Did you know there are many ways to say “bottle” in Spanish?) and to connect with the Latin American community in Pittsburgh. When speaking about language accessibility in our region, Isi emphasized the importance of identifying key dialectical needs in the community and filling those gaps.

Contrary to her favorite idiom in Spanish “Se me echó la yegua” (or literally, “My mare broke down”), Isi is a very motivated self-starter. A designer by trade, she brought her passion for working with home design and renovation back to Pittsburgh, where she is currently working in single-family home restoration and landscaping. When asked her favorite architect, Isi referenced Chilean architect Smiljan Radic, whose notable works include the 2014 Serpentine Pavilion in London, and Félix Candela, a Spanish and Mexican architect known for his designs and developmental contributions to structural engineering.

When she’s not working, Isi is a Flamenco-appreciator, who grew up learning to dance with her family. Today, on Chilean Independence Day (September 18), we celebrate Isi’s cultural roots and her many contributions to our team, hopefully with a Chilean Hot Dog and glass of Terremoto (Earthquake Drink) in hand!
