Word of Mouth - November 2018

November 2018

Announcements:

Election day is November 6th. Voting is our most fundamental right as American Citizens and the single most effective tool we have to defend our democracy. Get out to the polls, and get your friends out to the polls. Global Wordsmiths will send a qualified volunteer interpreter to anyone who needs language assistance to vote in Allegheny County. Contact us at (412) 228-0240 to request a volunteer interpreter for yourself, a friend, or your polling station. Jefferson Community Collaborative Language Access Initiative Update - Thanks to the support of the Jefferson Regional Foundation, Global Wordsmiths has provided organizational language access plans and language accessibility training forGoodwill of SWPA, Jewish Family & Community Services, Just Harvest and Cribs for Kids, and these organizations are now eligible to receive interpretation services subsidized by this generous grant until July of 2020. One organization at a time, Southwestern PA is improving its capacity to serve English language learners. We are Hiring! Global Wordsmiths is looking for reliable bilingual staff in Erie, PA and here in Pittsburgh for most languages, but in particular: ASL, Arabic, Russian, Uzbek, Farsi, Urdu, Haitian Creole and Swahili. We provide comprehensive training and material support for all of our staff, so no prior interpretation experience is necessary- just language skills and a desire to help people use their voice. Contact careers@globalwordsmiths.com for details! Welcome, Meredith! Meredith Bapir, our talented Director of Programs and Evaluation, has joined our team full-time and will now be with us every day to scale our social impact, training and development programs, operations and evaluation processes. We are really lucky that she has chosen Global Wordsmiths as her home. In solidarity, Mary Jayne

Global Wordsmiths stands with Tree of Life.

We are shocked, devastated and angry, but we will stand tall to hold space for our Jewish brothers and sisters all over the world, for Pittsburgh, and for all those affected by this senseless act of hatred. We wish we could hold onto all of the pain, and take it far away from the victims and their loved ones. We cannot make sense of the violence, but we can come together in our grief, and we can fight harder to bring peace and light into the world every day. We can try to lighten the weight for those who carry the unimaginable burdens of Saturday’s tragedy. We love you so much. May their memories be for a blessing.

Culture

Languages are not identical, so rendering a text written in one language into another seems impossible to do, at least with complete accuracy. Translations of literary texts compound this basic problem, since literature takes language beyond its usual communicative or referential functions. How can we hope to translate something into a foreign language that already requires translation into its own?
