Word of Mouth - September 2018

September 2018

Announcements:

Global Wordsmiths Now Offers Video & Telephonic Interpretation! While we do not recommend the use of Video or Telephonic Interpreters for full encounters, we recognize that they are important tools for scheduling, making first contact and bridging gaps in service. Beginning this month, Global Wordsmiths will begin a soft rollout of these services in over 180 languages, 24/7. If you are interested in piloting with us, please contactinfo@globalwordsmiths.com to get on the wait list. Data Dump. The data has been crunched from our Summer 2018 Language Access Project cycle. From May 30th – August 3rd, 6 interns provided 1,164 volunteer hours for Sarah Heinz House, Literacy Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy and The Alliance for Refugee Youth Support and Education. Results:

  • 87 LEP individuals were served directly through in-person and/or phone interpretation. They came from the following countries: Nepal/Bhutan, China, Somalia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Mexico, Russia, and Guatemala.

  • 485.5 hours were spent translating 431 documents.

  • Of the hours spent interning, 52% was spent translating, 42% was spent interpreting, and 6% was spent training.

Thank YOU for your support of this program! By supporting Global Wordsmiths, you are helping us manage and fund this program, which provides this benefit at no cost to nonprofits every semester, so that they can more effectively serve immigrants and refugees in Allegheny County. Fall 2018 Language Access Project Kickoff. Here we go again! Through December, nine interns who speak Arabic, Nepali, Mandarin, Spanish, French, Russian and Japanese will provide free translation and interpretation for Literacy Pittsburgh, All for All, Sarah Heinz House, Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy, Baldwin Public Library, Brentwood Public Library, and Whitehall Public Library. Again, thank you for your support! Have a great month, Mary Jayne

Culture

“Anyone who has ever tried translation knows the feeling: Some are put off by its endless puzzles; others find them as addictive as chess. Kate Briggs’s “This Little Art” is a meditation on translation, full of quotes like the above, and of speculations about how translation interacts with, distorts and intensifies reading.” https://www.nytimes.com/2018/06/28/books/review/kate-briggs-this-little-art.html
